Flat Feet

Flat feet (pes planus) is a very common condition that many people have (including myself). It simply refers to the collapse of the arch in our foot.

Interesting fact - most sprinters have high arches (except Usain Bolt - he doesn’t need them). High arches gives a biomechanical advantage with respect to force production. Most of our ancestors were at some point high arched (supinators), since we had to escape from Mr. Danger and Co (and if not, were eaten), therefore we had to be able to run fast. However, over time, as we grew accustomed to a ‘safer’ environment, we no longer needed an advantage in running quickly (except to escape from bullies), thus our high arched predecessors eventually paved new wave of normal foot and flat footed individuals. Having flat feet might translate into pain in the feet, knees, hips, and back. There are many treatment modalities to help manage your flat feet including stretches, strengthening exercises for the muscles and ligaments surrounding your arch and custom made orthotics.

Come see how I can help you with your feet :)
